Recuerdos

Doug Veit, 81, of Craig, Alaska, died on April 9, 2026 of complications from a stroke.

Doug was born and raised in New York, and later lived in Chicago, Maine, Michigan (both peninsulas), Maine again, and California. He enjoyed coffee, trains (real and model), travel, playing Santa and practicing his German. His true love though was Alaska, including two years in Utqiaġvik while serving in the US Public Health Service in the early 1970s, and over three decades in Craig. He made his living both as a carpenter and as a social worker. He had strong opinions but a soft side for helping people.

Pre-deceased by older brother Bob, and survived by his children Tony and Cyndi and their families. Burial will be held in Craig in the summertime. May he rest in peace.

In lieu of flowers, please treat yourself to a good cup of coffee.

I knew Doug for about 8 years, initially via the internet, then by emails every couple of months. Especially at Christmas time when he would email me a Jacquie Lawson Advent Calendar which he loved to share and we would laugh about the puzzles and little hidden things to discover within the Calendar. He was very kind and supportive of me, and it is with great sadness to learn he has passed on. The last time we were in touch was in February 2026, and then I emailed him some photo from Croatia when I was on holiday end of May, but I had no reply which I thought strange. Since then I emailed two queries to see if he was OK and then tried phoning. Having done an Internet search on his name and address, I found this memorial. So very sorry to loose a good and trusted friend. Bless you Doug, your will always be in my thoughts. John W "Frosty" Birmingham England

I met Doug when we were teenagers. His father was married to my mother. We drifted apart during time and life, but would reconnect from time to time. It was always good to hear from him. He had strong opinions, but was a real softie when it came to his children and family. Rst in the arms of the angels, Dougie.

I met Doug in the late 80s when he was hired on at COHO. My kids called him Unca Doug. When we moved to Ketchikan, Doug would frequently stay with us when he traveled to and from California. This cup of coffee is set next to one of a few cacti shoots he gifted me that came off of a cactus he brought back from CA. When I think of Doug, i don’t think of coffee, I think of the gallons of non-fat milk he would drink! I will miss our conversations.

ÁRBOL CONMEMORATIVO PLANTADO

In memory of Doug Veit

1 Árbol plantado en Canada

In memory of a life that brought our families together through Cyndi’s friendship. The bond we share continues to grow across distance and time. May this tree stand as a quiet tribute to that connection.
