John M Midthun

Dr. John Midthun, 71, passed away 08/14/2023. He passed peacefully in his home surrounded by familyafter a brief battle with cancer. John grew up in Wisconsin where he graduated medical school from the University of WisconsinMadison. He met his wife Cathy during his residency in Spokane, WA. In 1978 they embarked on theadventure of a life0me, moving to remote Alaska. After settling in Anchorage, John and Cathy welcomedfour children, thus solidifying their life in Alaska. In total, Dr. Midthun served the Alaskan community for45 years as a Radiologist with ANMC. He was proud to have worked with the Indian Health Service for hisen0re medical career. John loved Alaska and explored that state extensively. He enjoyed fishing, camping, and skiing with hiswife and kids. He valued rela0onships above everything and loved sharing his home with everyone. Hiswarmth, generous spirit, and sense of humor will be missed by everyone who knew and loved him.John was best described by one of his children, “Our Dad was an amazing man who lived an amazinglife.” John is survived by his wife Cathy, his four children, Jennifer (Gary) Janes, Nathan (Brittany) Midthun,Andrew (Maura Bishop) Midthun, and Sarah (Scott) Lyons, as well as his three grandchildren, Thomas,Matthew, and new granddaughter arriving soon. John also leaves behind loving extended family inWisconsin, Washington, and many friends in Alaska. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Cancer Society or Hospice ofAnchorage. Per John’s wishes, his remains will be cremated, and no local service will be held.
