Paul Leonard Steer, MD, FACP, passed away at his home in Anchorage, Alaska, on Friday, Oct. 25, 2024, at the age of 83.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Dr. Arthur and Esther Steer, Paul's early life was shaped by his father's military career. He spent his formative years on base in various locations, including Japan, Germany, and Bethesda, Maryland. After attending Duke University, he earned his medical degree from the University of Colorado in 1967. It was there that he met his future wife, Bonnie Coughlin, over an autopsy table. They married in 1967.

Following his internship at Cincinnati General Hospital, and infectious disease fellowship in Colorado, Paul and Bonnie embarked on a new adventure in Alaska to fulfill his military obligation with the U.S. Public Health Service. The couple drove to Alaska in a small blue Ford Bronco loaded with one dog, three houseplants, and all their worldly possessions. This move ignited a lifelong love for the state's rugged beauty and outdoor lifestyle. After completion of his Public Health service, Paul and Bonnie decided to make Anchorage their home where he joined a private practice group and they raised three children.

Paul's career as an internist and infectious disease specialist spanned nearly five decades. He was highly respected by his colleagues and deeply cared for his patients. His dedication to his profession often extended beyond the typical workday, sometimes at the expense of personal family time. He enjoyed serving as a volunteer team physician for the University of Alaska Anchorage athletic program.

Paul's career as a physician included Fellowships in the American College of Physicians Society of Internal Medicine and the Infectious Diseases Society of America. Paul was an active staff member at both Providence Alaska Medical Center and Alaska Regional Hospital since 1973. He served as Chair of the Infection Control Committee at both hospitals various times.

Paul loved spending his summers on the family sailboat in Prince William Sound, golfing the local courses in Anchorage, and hunting/fishing remote areas accessible only by small planes, boats, and beat-up trucks.

In retirement, Paul and Bonnie continued to explore the world, particularly enjoying river cruises and warm destinations with friends. He cherished spending time with his family, especially his six grandchildren: Glenn and Clayton Steer, Quetzal and Trogon Hauser, and Esther and Isaac Wilson.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Dr. Michael Steer, sister-in-law Vera Steer, and brother-in-law Allen Ottoson. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Bonnie Steer: sister-in-law, Christine Ottoson (Coughlin): and many nieces and nephews. Paul and Bonnie's three children, spouses, and six grandchildren still live in Alaska: Zack and Anjanette (Knapp) Steer, Becky and Scott Hauser, and Rachel and Alex Wilson.

In keeping with Paul's wishes, no formal service or memorial will be held. His ashes will be scattered in Prince William Sound, a place he held dear. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations be made to a charity of their choice. Or, simply spend time with loved ones outdoors, honoring Paul's spirit of adventure.
