John Birmingham

Jack Birmingham passed away March 28, 2024 with his family by his side.He was the husband of Paula Birmingham, and they shared almost 41years of marriage together.Jack was born in Jacksonville, North Carolina, the son of Grant and JanetBirmingham. He was graduated from high school in Baltimore and laterfrom the University of California, Berkley earning a bachelor’s degree inmechanical engineering and juris doctorate from the Berkley School of Law.Jack was drafted into military service in 1966 and was honorablydischarged in 1970. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross in1969 for his extraordinary heroism in the Vietnam War. Jack was alsoawarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Silver and Bronze Star andother military medals. He will be buried at Fort Richardson NationalCemetery.More than anything else, Jack thoroughly enjoyed the annual deer hunt inKodiak with his son and close friends. He loved everything about hunting;from planning the hunt with various and sundry checklists, successfullyfinishing the hunt and butchering his own meat in the kitchen at home. Jackloved fishing, camping and generally any outdoor activity – as long as itwas in Alaska; particularly any activity that involved doing things with guns,rifles and fishing poles.Jack never met a stranger and made many friends over the years whereverhe went. He was always interested in how and what other people weredoing and shared many stories with those he met.Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife Paula, son Grant,sisters Kitty and Anne, his brother Bill, sisters in-law Cathi (Steve) andSusan (Steve), his nieces Rebecca and Janet, and his many friends.A memorial service and celebration of Jack’s life is planned for June 2,2024, 2-5 pm at the Viking Hall.
