Caroline E.B. "Carrie" Lewis

On Nov. 10, 2020, Caroline "Carrie" E. B. Lewis, born in 1930, quietly slipped away at 3 Angels Assisted Living Home with friends and caregivers nearby. A graduate of Tufts near Boston in Massachusetts, Carrie visited Alaska in 1961, and liked it so well she returned in 1962 to make it her home for the rest of her life. She trained to be a med tech, and worked for a number of years at the state lab, located at that time not far from the Pioneer School House on 3rd Avenue. A friend encouraged her to join the ski patrol at Alyeska, which she did. She also made lifelong friends at the Mountaineering Club and at Prospectors. Weekends she often spent at her cabin in Girdwood, Alaska, a cabin for which she oversaw the planning and construction. Travel was a large part of her life. Winter holidays Carrie often flew to New York or Boston for family reunions. While there, she enjoyed playing bridge, and particularly enjoyed playing with her brother Alfred. Both were Life Masters. Other times she traveled extensively to other parts of the world. Her art collection was eclectic and lovely, with Alaska native masks and carvings, but also African pieces, items from America's Southwest, and some Asian art as well. She lived fairly modestly but was generous in her support for the Anchorage community. Her ashes will be scattered at a few of her favorite places nearby. As with the local Anchorage charities and the University, the family would also like to acknowledge and express their appreciation for her generosity to them during her lifetime. The family extends their sincere thanks to the 3 Angels Assisted Living Home off DeBarr for the kind, professional care she received there, and to Ancora Hospice.
