Souvenirs

George Edward Dorman Jr. was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Kathryn "Kitty" and Dr. George Dorman. Known as Eddie growing up, he spent his formative years immersed in the countryside, riding horses, and nurturing a burgeoning passion for aviation. After his graduation from Emporium High School in1954, George enlisted in the United States Air Force. And where he met his future wife, Captain Dorothy Connolly, while giving her flying lessons.

Following his service, George's adventurous spirit drew him to Alaska, where he attended the University of Fairbanks before earning a degree in Electrical Engineering at Pennsylvania State University. This foundation paved the way for a successful career with Schlumberger, which took him & his family to California, Alaska, Indonesia, Norway, and Louisiana, before ultimately returning to the place that had captured his heart - Alaska.

George's professional journey also included stints at Gearhart,  FS Air Service and he was affectionately known as “the paint guy” at True Value.

George loved planes and flying. He built and rebuilt several planes in his lifetime. His dedication extended to his volunteer work with the Civil Air Patrol, where he was integral with numerous life-saving missions. In his retirement years, he remained an active presence at the Alaska Aviation Museum, sharing his knowledge as a tour guide, joining Friday afternoon safety meetings, and contributing his expertise to antique restoration projects-like the Fairchild and the Pilgrim. It will be done Thursday! (IYKYK).

George had other talents, too. He could make a fantastic Irish coffee. He could always be counted on for sound handyman advice. He could make small fish look really big.  But cooking was not one of his strengths, so he was a regular at Las Margaritas and Sorrento’s. And he was always up for new experiences- like having a cameo appearance as an 80's businessman in the film "Big Miracle"

George was a devoted husband to his late wife, Dorothy, and a loving father to his children, Bill, Patrick (Kim Jaime), and Connie (Mark Greenlee). His grandchildren, Svea Dorman, Jack Dorman, and Charlie Jaime, were a source of immense joy in his life. He is also survived by extended family in Ohio, Texas, New York and Hawaii.

George Dorman will be remembered for his passion for all things aviation, telling stories, his sense of humor, his love of dogs, handing down the tradition of making Irish coffees to the next generation, and being the voice of reason. Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

A celebration of his life will be held at the Alaska Aviation Museum on Friday, January 10th from 5-9pm.
